The Gridiron Ice: The Thursday Sports Feature on A Football Player and A Hockey Player!

May the day have unfolded like a perfect melody, bringing you joy in every interaction, warmth in every encounter, and peace in every breath. UND Football's Mason South and North Dakota Hockey's EJ Emery will be featured in this week's Thursday Sports Feature.




        Mason South is a Tight End for the Fighting Hawks Football Team, proudly representing his team with jersey number 44. Hailing from Maple Grove, Minnesota, South has established himself as a dedicated player with a promising collegiate football career. Currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology, he demonstrates academic and athletic excellence. Throughout his collegiate journey, South has participated in an impressive 39 career games, showcasing his consistency and commitment to the sport. With 8 career receptions and an average of 8.6 yards per completion, he has proven to be a reliable offensive player. In the 2025 season, South further solidified his role on the team by playing in 14 games and achieving 6 receptions with an improved 9.3 yards per completion. As he approaches his senior year in 2026, South continues to be a valuable asset to the UND Football Team, combining his athletic skills with academic pursuits.


EJ Emery is a Defenseman who has been making significant strides in his hockey career at UND. Wearing jersey number 6, Emery has established himself as a key player on the team during his collegiate journey. Hailing from Compton, California, he brings a unique background to the UND Hockey program while pursuing his academic goals in General Studies. Throughout his collegiate hockey career, Emery has demonstrated consistent performance and resilience. With 69 career games under his belt, he has accumulated 3 career goals and 11 career assists, showcasing his defensive skills and occasional offensive contributions. His physical play is evident in his penalty statistics, having recorded 32 career penalties totaling 72 penalty minutes. In the most recent season, Emery continued to be an integral part of the UND Hockey team, participating in 38 games. During this period, he maintained his offensive output with 3 goals and 10 assists, while also accumulating 16 penalties and 32 penalty minutes. His ongoing development and commitment to the sport highlight his potential as a promising collegiate hockey player.
