Power Plays and Free Throws: The Basketball and Hockey Weekend Rundown!

Good Afternoon and Happy Sunday January 4th, 2026 North Dakota Fans! I hope this first Sunday of the new year, 2026, is treating you with extraordinary joy and remarkable moments. May the day be filled with delightful experiences, warm connections, and a sense of optimism that sets a positive tone for the entire year ahead. Wishing you a wonderfully awesome and memorable day that sparkles with happiness and potential. On this 1st Sunday of 2026 I will be sharing about UND Basketball and Hockey.

The Fighting Hawk Men's Basketball team has begun the new year with remarkable success, demonstrating exceptional performance in their early January games. In a compelling New Year's Day game on Thursday, January 1st, the Hawks delivered a decisive victory against Oral Roberts University (ORU), securing a 72-61 win. Building upon their momentum, the team continued their impressive run on Saturday, January 3rd, when they faced South Dakota State University (SDSU) in an intense overtime battle. The Hawks showcased their resilience and skill, ultimately triumphing with a thrilling 90-87 victory, further solidifying their strong start to the year and highlighting their competitive spirit on the basketball court.

The University of North Dakota Women's Basketball team encountered significant challenges at the start of 2026. Their first game of the year on New Year's Day, Thursday, January 1st, saw them facing the Denver (DU) team in a competitive match that resulted in a close 64-57 loss. The Hawks demonstrated resilience by returning to the basketball court just two days later on Saturday, January 3rd, to compete against Oral Roberts University (ORU). Despite their determination, the UND Women's Basketball team experienced another difficult defeat, losing the game with a score of 95-67. These first two games of 2026 highlighted the team's struggle to find their rhythm and overcome tough opponents in the competitive collegiate basketball landscape.

The  UND Hockey team demonstrated exceptional performance as they commenced the 2026 segment of their 2025-2026 season with remarkable success. In a commanding display of skill and teamwork, UND secured a decisive 2-0 victory against Mercyhurst University (MU) on Friday, January 2nd, 2026. Building upon their initial triumph, the team continued their impressive momentum the following day, Saturday, January 3rd, 2026, by delivering a resounding 6-1 defeat to MU. This comprehensive weekend sweep emphatically positioned UND at the forefront of their competitive hockey campaign, showcasing their potential and setting a strong tone for the remainder of the season. The team's back-to-back victories not only demonstrated their offensive prowess and defensive solidity but also signaled their intent to be a formidable force in collegiate hockey during this competitive season.
