I have made the decision to break up the North Dakota Hockey at the NHL Draft Blog into two separate and distinct parts. The first part will cover the NHL Draft Round One, which took place on Friday, June 26, 2026, and the second part will cover the NHL Draft Rounds Two through Seven, which took place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, and I will release that blog on Monday, June 29, 2026. What an absolutely big and momentous night Friday, June 26, 2026 turned out to be for North Dakota Hockey. North Dakota Hockey had an impressive total of three players who got drafted in the NHL Draft first round. Incoming freshman player Carson Carels kicked off the big night in a major way by being taken 6th overall by the Calgary Flames. The second of the three players who were chosen was UND sophomore in the 2026-2027 season, Keaton Verhoeff. He was selected 9th overall by the San Jose Sharks. The third hockey player who was drafted was Liam Ruck, who will officially come to play hockey at UND in the 2027-2028 season. He was taken 22nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
