I hope you're feeling energized and motivated, and that your day is filled with excitement and joy. Today, I will be discussing UND Hockey and the Grand Forks Spitfires.
On the North Dakota Hockey News front, there are 3 former players who are heading towards National Hockey League Free Agency. One of the players who is heading towards NHL Free Agency is Cole Smith, who previously played with the Vegas Golden Knights and helped the team land in the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals. They were just 2 games away from being named Stanley Cup Champions, which was an incredible achievement. The other 2 players who are also heading towards NHL Free Agency due to their contracts being up are Vancouver Canucks Derek Fobort and Nashville Predators Tyson Jost.
On Thursday, July 2nd, 2026, the Grand Forks Spitfires faced off against the Wausau Ignite in front of a crowd of 750 dedicated fans. In the first inning, both teams exchanged a scoring opportunity, which resulted in the inning ending in a tied situation at 1-1. In the second inning, it was predominantly all Wausau as they dominated the scoring, putting up 3 runs to go up and take a commanding lead of 4-1 heading into the 3rd inning of play. In the 3rd inning, the Spitfires managed to score 2 runs with Sofia Meer and Addie Ferguson each scoring to cut the deficit down to 4-3 going into the 4th inning of play. In the 4th inning, the Ignite scored an impressive 5 runs (Brooke Steinhorst, Taylor Liebelt, Quinn Marnocha, Claire Calmes, and Mia Johnson all scoring) to take a commanding 9-3 lead over the Spitfires. In the 5th inning, both the Spitfires and Ignite each scored 1 run (Marnocha for the Ignite and Shannon Cunningham for the Spitfires). At that point, Wausau held a 10-4 lead over Grand Forks. In the 6th inning, it was all Ignite as they scored 1 run while keeping Grand Forks off the scoreboard, extending their lead to 11-4. In the 7th inning, Ignite's Marley Teasley, Claire Calmes, and Mia Johnson each scored runs to give the Ignite a commanding 14-4 lead. Later in the seventh inning, Anna Elliott scored to cut Wausau's lead to 14-5. The Spitfires were ultimately defeated decisively by the Wausau Ignite with a final score of 14-5.
On Friday, July 3rd, 2026, the Grand Forks Spitfires and the Wausau Ignite met once again in what would turn out to be an exciting matchup. The scoring action didn't begin to unfold until the 2nd inning when Spitfire Pitcher Mattison Kwarta stepped up and scored to make it 1-0, /while successfully keeping the Wausau team off the scoreboard. There was absolutely no scoring that took place in the 3rd inning as both teams remained quiet. In the 4th inning, Grand Forks managed to get 3 more runs on the board while continuing to keep the Ignite off the scoreboard, extending their lead to 4-0. In the 5th and 6th innings, things stayed relatively quiet with no scoring from either team. However, in the 7th inning, the Ignite's Mia Buske and Brooke Steinhorst each managed to score a run apiece, but ultimately the Spitfires were victorious and won the game 4-2.
