The Thursday Sports Rush: The Spitfires Double Header Recap and The UND Football and Spitfire Softball Thursday Sports Feature!

        Good Morning and Happy Thursday July 2nd, 2026 Fighting Hawk and Spitfire Fans! Grab your absolute favorite morning beverage that you genuinely love the most and cherish deeply, and let's dive right in together with enthusiasm — your day is truly about to get a whole lot better, more exciting, and more fulfilling than you could have possibly imagined or anticipated! I sincerely hope you have a truly spectacular, wonderful, and amazing day! Today I will be talking in detail about the Grand Forks Spitfires games that took place on Sunday, June 28th, 2026, and also about The Thursday Sports Feature segment.


        On Sunday, June 28th, 2026, the Grand Forks Spitfires faced off against the LaCrosse Steam in an exciting double header matchup held in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Game One: In the opening first inning, Addison Craig stepped up to the plate and successfully got the Spitfires on the scoreboard with an early run. This was quickly followed up by two additional runs scored by Shannon Cunningham and Mattison Kwarta, which allowed the Spitfires to establish an impressive early lead of 3-0. However, in the bottom half of the 1st inning, the LaCrosse Steam answered back when Trinity Gregg managed to score a run, cutting into the Spitfires' lead and narrowing it to 3-1. Moving into the 2nd inning, the Spitfires continued their strong offensive performance by adding yet another run to extend their lead to 4-1, while simultaneously preventing the Steam from scoring any additional runs. In the 3rd inning, the momentum shifted dramatically as the LaCrosse Steam erupted offensively, scoring an impressive 6 runs to take a commanding 7-4 lead heading into the 4th inning. During the 4th inning, the Steam added one more run while continuing to hold the Spitfires scoreless, extending their advantage to 8-4. In the 5th inning, Grand Forks mounted an impressive comeback effort, scoring 4 runs courtesy of Mattison Kwarta, Taylor Larson, Anna Elliott, and Addie Ferguson, which tied the game at 8-8. In the 6th inning, the Spitfires' Taylor Larson, Audrey Reeves, and Addison Craig all scored to give Grand Forks an 11-8 lead. Later in that same 6th inning, the Steam responded with 2 runs from Reagon Proud and Kaylie Frydenlund to trim the lead to just 11-10. In the decisive 7th inning, the Grand Forks Spitfires increased their lead by 4 runs when Mattison Kwarta, Taylor Larson, Anna Elliott, and Audrey Reeves all scored, ultimately helping the Spitfires secure the victory with a final score of 15-10.


        Game 2: In the opening inning, Grand Forks' Sofia Meer scored a run to give the Spitfires an early 1-0 lead. Thereafter, in the bottom of the first inning, The Steam responded impressively by scoring 2 runs, with both Trinity Gregg and Makayla Etling each contributing to bring the score to 2-1 Steam. Moving into inning 2, The Spitfires made a strong comeback to tie the game when Addie Ferguson scored an important run to even things up at 2-2. Later on in that same 2nd inning, LaCrosse came through with a powerful offensive display, scoring 8 runs to take a commanding 10-2 lead. In the 3rd inning, The Spitfires cut into the deficit with solid play, scoring 5 runs to make it 10-5 while successfully not allowing The Steam to score any additional runs. In the 4th inning, The Steam scored 2 more runs to extend their lead to 12-5. There was no scoring activity in the 5th inning from either team. In the 6th and final inning of the night, The Steam's Kaylie Frydenlund, Annabelle Ross, and Jackie Larsen each scored one run apiece to secure a decisive victory over the Spitfires with a final score of 15-5.

        Today's Thursday Sports Feature will feature UND Football's Kristen Hoskins and Grand Forks Spitfires' Mattison Kwarta. Kristen Hoskins is a Wide Receiver who hails from Alexandria, Minnesota, and proudly wears the distinctive jersey number 13. He is currently pursuing an academic degree with a major focus in Social Science. He initially started his collegiate football career as a Minnesota Gopher and remained with the program for a total of three years, though he was only able to suit up and participate in just 3 games during that time. Following that chapter of his athletic journey, he officially made the significant transfer to UND, for his junior year, which took place during the 2025 season, and he will be a Senior in the 2026 season. During the 2025 season, he played in a total of 10 games for the Fighting Hawks. Throughout that season, he rushed for a combined total of 67 yards. Additionally, he recorded 8 receptions during his time on the field. Hoskins also accumulated 8 rushing attempts over the course of the season.


        Mattison Kwarta is an accomplished Pitcher who proudly wears the distinctive jersey number 25 for the Grand Forks Spitfires, which is a competitive summer team. During the regular school year, she plays for the prestigious San Diego State University. She is a proud native of Red Bluff. She has played in a total of 12 games for the Spitfires throughout the season. Her impressive pitching record for the Spitfires stands at 5-4-0. She has pitched a total of 39.1 innings across all her appearances. Her earned run average is 7.12.
